Below is the interview with Fida Abbott by Resources for Mom and Kids regarding to her second Amerindo Kitchen book in series, Tumpeng.

1. I see from the book cover, the food looks like something grand, the array of food for grand festival or celebration. What does Tumpeng mean?

Tumpeng is well known by Java, Bali, and Madura people as a cone-shaped rice dish like mountain with its side dishes. They can be vegetables and meat. It is traditionally featured in the slamatan ceremony. The rice itself could be plain steam rice, uduk rice (cooked with coconut milk), or yellow rice (uduk rice colored with turmeric).

The cone shaped rice used to stand in the middle of tampah. Tampah is rounded woven bamboo container, covered with banana leaves and surrounded by assorted Indonesian dishes, such as urap vegetables, fried chicken, empal (sweet and spicy fried beef), abon sapi (beef floss), teri kacang (anchovy with peanuts), telur pindang (boiled marble egg), shredded omelet, sambal goreng tempe (sweet and dry fried tempeh), perkedel kentang (mashed potato fritters), perkedel jagung (corn fritters), sambal goreng ati (liver in chilli sauce), and many other things with carved vegetables or carved fruits as its decoration.

People in Java, Bali, and Madura usually make Tumpeng to celebrate the important events. However, all Indonesians are familiar with Tumpeng. The philosophy of Tumpeng is related to the geographical condition of Indonesia, especially Java as a fertile island with numerous mountains and volcanoes. Tumpeng dated back to ancient Indonesian tradition that revered mountains as the abode of ancestors and gods. The cone-shaped rice meant to mimics the holy mountain. The feast served as some kind of thanksgiving for the abundance of harvest or any other blessings.

2. The word Amerindo is catchy. How did you get the idea to create this word?

I found this name unexpectedly and coincidentally. When my daughter was several months old, in a night in the living room when she was awoke, I had conversation with my husband about our baby girl. I told her that she had a half of Indonesian blood and American blood and I had an idea to call her: Amerindo Baby. It means American and Indonesian baby. That was the word Amerindo came from.

3. Is Tumpeng cookbook all about Indonesian food or do you include American food as well?

Tumpeng is all about Indonesian food and some of them I have modified the ingredients to match with what American used to use.

4. How did you learn to cook Tumpeng? Is it from your family tradition or do you get inspiration from other Indonesian cookbooks?

I have been familiar with Tumpeng since I was little child. My grandmother used to make Tumpeng for special Java celebration and I’ve learned from there. And of course I read many Tumpeng resources.

5. How do you overcome the obstacles of cooking Indonesian food such as Tumpeng if you are not in the country origin of the food itself? Some ingredients may not be available and some traditional cooking utensils are not found in US.

When I didn’t find any ingredients that I had to use, I substitute them with what American ingredients have. For example: they don’t have fresh turmeric so I have to use turmeric powder; they don’t have tampah, I use large plastic tray or a big platter; they don’ t have a cone shape made from bamboo, I make it with hard paper or b-day cone hat. Sometimes I use other shapes besides a cone, by using cake pans/mouldings.

6. Unlike other cook books that have pictures and recipe of the food, you have made a difference in your cookbook that every food has a story, what is the story about?

Some of them the story of how I used the substituted ingredients/ tools, etc.

7. Have you modified the way of cooking Tumpeng with your own way, make it more easy and more simple so every family is able to cook Tumpeng for a family celebration?

Yes, and some of them I blend them with American style. For example: It’s difficult to find young grated coconut to make Urap-urap (a name of food), so I substitute it with red and white cabbage salad. It means I don’t need the young grated coconut anymore.

8. Talking about your passion in cooking and culture. Your origin is from Java and now you live in States. How does your origin culture influence your way of cooking in States?

I almost cook rice twice-four times per week and the rest of the days in a week, I cook American food.

9. Amerindo Kitchen in series, how do you plan to write each cookbook? Does each book talk about specific different food? Are they all about Indonesian and American fusion food as its name Amerindo?

Yes, each book will talk about specific different food and all will be about Indonesian and American fusion food. My husband had an idea for me that Amerindo Food is American food with an Indonesian touch. I love that idea!!!

10. Who is your target market for this cookbook?

Everybody who has passion in cooking, everybody who loves to learn about Indonesian food, everybody who likes to try the new recipes, everybody who likes to collect cookbooks and/or give it as a gift.

Fida doesn’t only share her own cooking recipes, she shares her own stories, culture and creativity in her cookbook Tumpeng. She also helps unprivileged children from the sales of this book. Make Enthusiasm A Part of Your Life

I was introduced to this novel called “ENTHUSIASM” by my dear friend Viviana Widjaja. I must say this book is really inspiring. It was a great motivation for me since I started reading this book. I have never heard about Fida R. Abbott until I read this book. Every page was told about her determination, struggle and desire in life to become a published author. Her journey and her wisdom of day to day life with her family and children was her pillar of strength.

I really give a salute to Fida R. Abbott for her sheer determination, passion and courage in writing this book. She had the enthusiasm to make her dream a reality. Somewhat like the television show “Seinfeld,” which billed itself as a show about nothing, “Enthusiasm” uses the largely mundane daily struggles of aspiring writer and author Fida Abbott as a vehicle to illustrate a larger point – that everyone has the spark of greatness within them and, although the odds are often long, reaching a desired destination is the ultimate prize.

Abbott is a housewife with a large aspiration. She wants to join the inner circle of U.S. writers and actually publish a book detailing her life and experiences. English is her second language and she is foreign-born, so the obstacles in her path are formidable. Yet she recalls that a former colleague in her student days was once inspired by a tossed-off sentence that Abbott wrote in a notebook, saying it changed her life.

That lesson hits home with both our heroine and her readers, as we travel with her in her daily grind and take great pleasure in small triumphs along the way, perhaps learning that what can be easily dismissed at first glance holds far greater value upon closer examination. Readers will empathize with the Abbott family’s existence, the fights between spouses, the meals that are shared and the small, kind gestures by online commentators that have a major impact on Abbott.

This quote captured Viviana Widjaja's attention--she is an entrepreneur who has some online businesses in Malaysia--when she read Fida Abbott’s personal blog. She had an opportunity to do the e-mail interview with her, a new published author in USA who wrote her first novel, titled Enthusiasm.

Let’s find out from the interview why she choose a career as a published author, how enthusiasm can play an important role in her life, and what readers can learn from her story.

Below is her eleven questions in her interview with Fida Abbott.

1. What made you pursue a career as a published author?

Well, I think before I answer that question, I better explain why I write. I like writing. It is not for making money but I want to show up my thought through writing. That’s why most of my writings in some online media don’t make money. I like sharing my thought and it comes purely from my heart. Knowing that I have “something” in my writing skill, I believe with the touch and combine of my creativity, I can make more than just writing in some online media. That is writing a book. I started from the simple one. It is an e-Book for children. I gave its title: “What Prayers Does Mommy Teach Me?”. Several months later it continued with another e-Book. It is Poem Anthology, titled "Dancing in My World", and then it continued with cooking book, titled "Amerindo Kitchen in Series" as my own creation 100%. From three creations I had done, I was sure I could do more than those. Writing Novel was the next step. So now, I will answer your question honestly that as a published author for me is a pleasure and dream more than pursuing it as a career. I feel satisfied every time I have done with my new creativity and I would love to bring them to the world and it is not only hiding in my flash disc, he, he, . . . Also I believe many people think that career is identical with making money. I don’t make much money from my two e-books and a cooking book before because I focus to donate some of the revenue to support Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Cancer Research and Unreached Children Program.

2. Do you have a mission in your writing?

Yes, I have. Through my writings, my readers can take learning for every story I have written and I hope it can motivate them and give an inspiration in their life. Also for every single of purchased book, I will donate some revenue/royalty to be used for my other books/e-books’ marketing purposes to support Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Cancer Research Program and Unreached Children Program.

3. Why do you choose them?

I have the reasons why I choose them.
First, I would like to show my deep support and love to my son who is struggling in having Cystic Fibrosis, one of the killer diseases in USA, especially for the children. Through my small donation, I believe every small amount will help CF foundation to keep running their research of this disease and will help many children in the world who have this disease, including my son to live longer.

Second, I have family and friends or my friends’ family who ever had cancer and even some of them passed away. Most of them are women. I believe cancer is the scariest disease for women, including me. I would be very happy to show my support through my small action in Cancer Research Program.

Third, I love children. I ever gave my free private course to two children from two very poor families in Indonesia. I think now they have been as the young men already. From there my heart had been touched deeper to always find a way even small thing to support the poor children. I hope from Unreached Children Program, my small donation will always help to establish their activities.

4. How hard is it to be a published author?

To be a published author is not an easy thing. I must have passion and discipline to realize it. It means there are many challenges to face them.

5. Do you think that marketing efforts from the publisher play a vital role to the success of your book?

Publisher and authors have to work together to market the books.

6. About your latest novel book and e-book "Enthusiasm", Could you brief the story inside your book?

I narrate the journey of my life and share how enthusiasm played a vital role in pursuing my dream in the writing world—with English as my second language—in my new country, USA. Here, I exemplify my experiences, my family and relationships, my inspirations, and my passage towards my remarkable goals. 7. What kind of author do you want to be in the future, a best writing author or a best selling author?

I always have desire to inspire my readers. What I want to be is becoming an inspiring author. If I have to choose which one of those choices for my future--a best writing author or a best selling author--I will let my readers to choose.

8. What was the most life changing experience you wrote in your book Enthusiasm?

The answer is my writing life. When I wrote my two e-books and coobook before are different with this one, "Enthusiasm". I spent a lot of my time totally to write this book, page by page, chapter by chapter and I could feel the real person becoming as a writer. I really didn't know why I was so enthusiastic in writing this book. Sometimes I spent several hours but I just only wrote not more than two pages. I did more in reading and searching to complete my story. This effort needs my patience. And as its title itself I had written this "Enthusiasm" as I had been so enthusiastic in writing it. I could feel it and it was--I had written it in my story. So actually this novel is a story about itself.

9. What plan do you have in mind after writing Enthusiasm? What are they?

I have prepared to write my second and third novel. I haven’t written them yet but the themes and stories have been in my mind. The second novel will be a true romance story and the third novel will be as the next Enthusiasm Saga. I’m also planning to write non fiction book in Indonesian in the next upcoming years.

10. Could you give some advices for women who aspire to take up writing as their career path?

If they want to take up writing as their career path or if I may mention as a real writer, don’t ever think that you just want to write because it will give you much money. Well… I don’t say that you may not make money from writing but don’t put it in the top of your list as a career if you just want to be a writer because you will make much money. Remember, there are many competitions around you, regionally, nationally or even internationally. Become a great writer will take long path or journey and it is not easy. You have to make serious effort to make it happen. Writing also is a process and passion. You can not become a real writer in just one or several years. It can be at least five or ten years from the time you want to start to write. Now my question to them: do they still want to be a writer as their career?

11. What messages do you convey to your readers especially women and moms so they can learn and benefit from your book?

Whoever you are, a single Mom or Mom with a child or several or some children, or even a single woman, no matter what and how you do, if you have a dream or goal in your life, realize it with great effort and enthusiasm. Though if you even don’t know the end of the result, it will be realized or not, at least you have tried and let God do the rest. Through this way, you will make yourself happy and you won’t be sad or disappointed if there is nothing comes up, even small.

Testimony of Novel "Enthusiasm" from Michael J. Talley

On Saturday night (04/03/2010) when Fida Abbott was online at the second floor of her house, her little daughter handed her a white envelope. Her daughter thought it was an information letter from a neighbor that Easter Bunny would come on Sunday morning and hide some eggs in their frontyard and backyard. She was so excited. When Fida read the sender's name--Michael J. Talley--she told her, it wasn't from the Easter Bunny but a letter from a neighbor who lives in front of their house. She was OK after Fida told her that on Sunday morning they both would have fun at church, go home, and hunt the eggs at their backyard.

A first look at this recipe book was a bit daunting. Maroon-brown hard cover with that crispy-but-juicy look of the turkey and all the trimmings will surely bring up your appetite. "Fabulous Leftover Turkey", really??

With so many turkey recipes out there what makes this one stand out? First, it's the creativity of the author, Fida Abbott, who smartly combine two great cultures: Indonesia, where she from, and America, where her husband from, into these recipes. The result? Ten great dishes that are easy to prepare. Second, not like others, the author also shares her story of how she came up with recipe ideas and it's background. This makes cooking more enjoyable. Third, pictures are nice. Even though they could be more attractive if they were more focussed and clearer. I personally like the setting and layout, even though in some pages margins are uneven. But it doesn't hurt much. Four, this book is for everyone. I'm vegetarian, but that doesn't mean I cannot use this recipe book. It gives me confidence to play around with non-meat ingredients.

That's what's fabulous! I definitely will recommend it to you. Can't wait for another series, Fida!
