Short Book Review from Van Elaine Deegan: "Enthusiasm"

Van Elaine Deegan found book Enthusiasm at West Chester Public Library couple years ago. She had been interviewed and it's posted on this blog. Her short review about this book has been published on Xlibris.

"The author was pretty impressive writing about her story. She is very talented for someone who can read and write two different languages than writing her story like a diary. This book inspired and motivated me to want to learn a second language, more than I did the first time. It's not as easy as it looks. I think you guys should read this book. It might start out slow, but it picks up in the middle." Van Elaine Degan

Thank you Van for your interest reading this book, being available to be interviewed, and writing a short review. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Book Review by Yunita Phillips

Cincinnati - Ohio, In the world of writing, how to find ideas and explore them to become interesting topics, it is very important. Especially for the beginning-aspiring writers, they are always wondering how to get the ideas.  That question is very important and essential because how can we produce one writing if we don't have ideas or material to be written? Young writers often stop writing or have stagnation because they don't know what to write, have no ideas, no inspiration, and a thousand-one other reasons that make them not to write.

The book of Exploring My Ideas written by Fida Abbott is a wonderful response to that situation. This book will guide the young writers to resolve that problem.

Through its creative and informative presentation of this book, Fida presents ten short stories as the examples of a writing which ideas have been developed from simple daily events. Fida presents 15 sources of ideas that writers can use and explore them. The writers are free to choose which source they might use. Based on the ten short stories she has presented; the writer’s personal experiences seem to be good source of ideas because they have strong appeal and great impetus for writers to accomplish their writings. The writer’s personal experiences contain elements that involve both writer’s emotional and intellectual—which will enrich her writings more lively and powerful.

To add the personal experiences, the writers need to conduct researches to provide accurate data or logic for the story. This is important because writers are intellectually responsible for educating their readers by presenting a good and trusty writing.

One of the main strengths of this book is how Fida wrote her stories with a smooth, straightforward, and storytelling way. Once we read one of the stories, we will be excited and look forward to continuing reading the next story. We will be curious to know what kind of stories she will convey next. The themes are varied, ranging from mystery, relationships in a family or a workplace, mental health problem, horror, spiritual problems, etc.

In addition to providing technique how to explore ideas, Fida provides ten guides to plot a short story. This methodology explains about how to put the idea into a short story. It includes introduction of the main character, story conflict, how the main character solves the problems, and how the story will end with a satisfying way. There are also some examples on how to apply that technique which is taken from one of the stories in the book. This book is more valuable as there are some encouragements to the readers on how to improve their writings and how to submit their stories for profit.

I strongly recommend this book to beginning-aspiring writers as their helpful handbook. This book also helps us not to be afraid to write and not to be doubtful of our ideas. No matter how simple the ideas that arise in our minds, it is valuable, and we need to appreciate it. If we immediately take steps to work on it, it will become an interesting and enjoyable story to read.(*)

EXPLORING MY IDEAS: A Review by Janelle Alex Ph.D. from Readers' Favorite

Reviewed by Janelle Alex, Ph.D. from Readers’ Favorite

Exploring My Ideas: Ten Short Stories Followed by the Author's Shared Ideas with a Simple and Practical Guide How to Explore and Compose Ideas into Short Stories is exactly what it claims to be - a compilation of short stories created by Fida Abbott, as well as her explanation of how people can think critically and write their own stories. Abbott starts off by sharing a bit of her personal story around writing the stories before sharing the actual stories themselves. Interestingly enough, each of the ten stories has a “story behind the short story above” section at the end of each tale. The overall concept of Exploring My Ideas is unique.

As each story is quite short and easy to read, Fida Abbott offers a number of fun, quick reads to enjoy from an entertainment perspective and as examples of how readers can follow her methodology and write their own stories based on their personal experiences. A drawback of Exploring My Ideas might be that it’s only five chapters long. The chapters jump from the introduction to an entire chapter with all of the stories and the final chapter being the guide to publish one’s own stories. However, the concept is excellent. The guide in chapters three through five is more like a mini-workbook to help readers and Abbott even uses one of her stories as an example of how to use her questions and guide. Fida Abbott’s Exploring My Ideas could be a great little book for inexperienced young writers. Good effort.(*)

EXPLORING MY IDEAS: 5 Stars Review from Readers' Favorite

Reviewed by Jack Magnus from Readers’ Favorite
Exploring My Ideas: Ten Short Stories Followed by the Author's Shared Ideas with a Simple and Practical Guide How to Explore and Compose Ideas into Short Stories is a collection of short stories and an educational guide for writers by Fida Abbott. Abbott is an author and writing instructor, who was born and grew up in Indonesia. She sees her stories as a way to express and share her experiences, feelings and thoughts, and she shows aspiring writers how they can do likewise with their own stories. While the conventional wisdom is to write what you know, Abbott demonstrates how writers can use written material and their imaginations to make other realities vivid enough to base a story on. She concludes each of her short stories with a section that gives “the story behind the short story.”

Fida Abbott’s short story collection and writer’s guide, Exploring My Ideas, is a well-written and thought-provoking book that analyzes and breaks down the writing process for new writers. Abbott’s voice is conversational and informative, and reading her book felt a lot like having her directly interacting with me as I read. I loved the supernatural aspect of The Rent House which was inspired by her own experiences with a haunted house. In Makeup Makeover, the reader is immersed in the world of a preteen whose first experiment with makeup transforms her into Elsa, the Snow Queen from Frozen. Abbott also includes a worksheet for creating and categorizing your story ideas and a chapter entitled Ten Guides to Plot a Short Story that analyzes in detail a short story from her collection. Exploring My Ideas is highly recommended.(*)

Perseverance and enthusiasm are two themes that I feel very strong appear in Fida Abbott’s book entitled Enthusiasm. As a main character in this book, she has responsibilities as a mother, a housewife, also as a worker. But she also has a strong will that she has to pursue her dream to become a writer. Her persistence and passion made her dream came true.
I enjoy reading this book. Even though it is bearing heavy themes but Fida has successfully presenting it in an easy and enjoyable writing. This book is informative as well. I will encourage my other writer friends to read this book, to have that enthusiasm, too.

A Review from U.K. Reader, Goodreads Giveaway Winner, 2013

Sarah Loft is from Wiltshire, GB (Great Britain). She was one of Goodreads Giveaway winners. Giveaway event was held on September 16-October 16, 2013. From total entrees 915, there was only 10 lucky winners who got Enthusiasm.

This is what she wrote after finished reading the whole story:

Wow, I feel like I know Fida personally and could count her as one of my friends. The style of writing is like a conversation with a friend, I could imagine sitting with coffee and cake and chatting with her. Wonderfully written, it is like a peep into someone's life, warts and all. She is not afraid of writing it as it is, and doesn't sugar coat anything. The fact that English isn't her first language makes the book more personal and readable, and her descriptions of everyday matters are stunningly brought to life with her informal writing style. I would recommend this book, it is a fantastic insight into a 'normal' life - and Fida comes across as a beautiful, warm, kind person.(*)

Enthusiasm is available at Amazon, BN, Xlibris, Kobo, etc. in some formats: hardcover, paperback and e-Book (Kindle, Nook, Reader, PC/Mac, iOS, tablet, Blackberry, and Android).

Title: Chaiku Poem Anthology
Author: Fida Abbott (The Author of Enthusiasm, Xlibris Corporation, USA 2010)
Published by: Fida Abbott (Lulu.com, 2011)
Pages: 20
Price: $20.47 (3 mini books)
Binding: Perfect-bound Paperback
Interior Ink: Full color
Weight: 0.44 lbs.
Dimensions (inches): 5.25 wide x 3.5 tall

The author defines Chaiku-a word that may still sound peculiar to us – as a new neologism of two last letters from the word Chinese, Ch and four last letters of the word Haiku, AIKU. Chaiku refers to an idea that Chinese rhyme may have the same role as Haiku in the composition of English poem.

HAIKU generally consists of three lines, in which the first and the third lines have five syllables and the second line composed in seven syllables. Meanwhile, Chaiku has four lines where each line should be composed in four syllables. It can be four words consist of one syllable or four syllables without considering the number of words. No limitation for the number of quatrain in Chaiku. It may have one quatrain or more. A poem about love published in www.thennextbigwriter.com follow is one example of Chaiku, four words in one line and has four syllables.

Though clothes should suit
Men short or Tall
Souls dress in love
One size fits all

In her mini book, Chaiku Poem Anthology, Fida wrote 8 beautiful poems that have deep meaning. They were written from any ideas in her personal life. Five of eight Chaiku written in this book tell the writer’s personal life. The Moon narrates Fida’s homesickness and her beloved ones in Indonesia as she lives in USA and cannot visit them any time. It is clearly represented in the last quatrain of Chaiku, entitled The Moon.

I just want you
To help sending
My warm regards
To them I love

Other prominent Chaiku, The World Largest Archipelago is the expression of the writer’s love to her motherland, Indonesia and its main life principle, unity in diversity. Its second and fourth quatrains evoke pride as an Indonesian.

More seventeen
Thousands islands
You might not know
Most unnamed

Thousands ethnics
Hundreds languages
In one nation
Indonesia

Another Chaiku entitled 2010 Birthday Gift shows the writer’s happiness because of her pregnancy in 2010. The third and fourth quatrains of this poem show her flaming happiness which is unbearable for not being expressed into a poem, Chaiku.

My birthday gift
the most special
a surprise gift
I expected

Now he or she
mysterious
still in my womb
warm and secure

In addition, First Winter, First Snow tells the writer’s new life in USA and Rainy Days is the expression of her hobby, gardening. In this mini book, Chaiku Poem Anthology, readers are not only given Chaiku about the writer’s personal life, it also has Summer Fun and Paradise that tells about summer holiday and general idea about paradise.

To those who love simplicity in the beauty of words, Chaiku Poem Anthology is a reading alternative that results in admiration, new knowledge, and satisfaction. Aside of My Beautiful Garden that was not written according to the rules of Chaiku, I do not find any weak points of this book. My Beautiful Garden that consists of more than four lines should not be included in this book as it deviates from the theme of this book. However, beautiful pictures, including the writer’s caricature, words, lines, quatrains, and title to title of Chaiku that have deep meaning in this mini book will definitely bring readers to the last page. Also, it is a good choice to pick as a small and sweet gift for family and friends. A special gift to enjoy and share with others. Enjoy reading! (*)

Tumpeng, An Authentic Indonesian Food

It's very surprising to find out that something ordinary but "special" here in Indonesia can be a very interesting thing in the U.S. I am about happy and delighted to see Indonesian recipes go to the U.S. through an Indonesian writer. Congratulations Mbak Fida, you are a very creative writer. I wonder how you can find all the seasonings in the U.S. I suggest to add more Indonesian traditional recipes to your next cookbooks. We have so many delicious traditional cakes and menus to write in books, especially "Onde-onde". I believe many Americans will like it. Aside of less brighter photographs, I do not have other criticism for this book. Good job, Mbak Fida.

NOVEL ENTHUSIASM: Review from Theivanai (Malaysia)

Make Enthusiasm A Part of Your Life

The enthusiasm simply means “great excitement for an interest in a subject or a cause”. It is the stepping stone of achieving your dreams whatever it will be.

I was introduced to this novel called “ENTHUSIASM” by my dear friend Viviana Widjaja. I must say this book is really inspiring. It was a great motivation for me since I started reading this book. I have never heard about Fida R. Abbott until I read this book. Every page was told about her determination, struggle and desire in life to become a published author. Her journey and her wisdom of day to day life with her family and children was her pillar of strength.

I really give a salute to Fida R. Abbott for her sheer determination, passion and courage in writing this book. She had the enthusiasm to make her dream a reality. I really appreciate her for sharing her journey of becoming an author and eventually publishing her book and also becoming a winner of the Book Pinnacle Achievement Award for the Spring 2010. You are truly an eye opener for aspiring writers like me.

I also salute her husband for being so positive and so encouraging in her work. As the saying “behind every successful women there is a man beside her”.

Anyone who has dreams of becoming a writer or anyone who are simply looking for an inspiration in their life to pursue a goal or a dream should read this book. (*)
